If you are just getting started with Shopify, choosing the right theme can be overwhelming. This post focuses on the Simple theme, a legacy free option from the Shopify Theme Store.

This review is part of a larger analysis of every free Shopify theme available. While the Simple theme offers specific utility, it is important to understand its limitations before making it the face of your brand.

Overview: Living Up to Its Name

As the name suggests, this theme is minimal. However, it boasts two distinct features that separate it from the majority of other free Shopify themes:

  1. Product Animations: The theme features a coded animation on the featured product section where products appear to "bubble up" the page. It adds a slight dynamic feel to an otherwise static layout.
  2. Sidebar Navigation: This is the defining feature of the theme. While most themes utilize a top horizontal navigation bar, Simple relies on an accordion-style sidebar menu. This is useful for stores with specific categorization needs but can limit screen real estate.

The Product Page Experience

The product page layout is functional but basic. It includes the standard elements required for e-commerce:

  • Product Image
  • Title and Pricing
  • Add to Cart Buttons
  • Variant Selectors
  • Product Description
  • Recommended Products (Footer)

User Sentiment

Statistically, the theme has a smaller user base compared to giants like Debut or Brooklyn. At the time of this review, it held approximately 29 reviews with an 86% positive rating. While those who use it tend to like it, the low volume of reviews suggests it is a niche choice.

Customization and Sections

When we look under the hood in the Shopify Customizer, the limitations of the Simple theme become apparent. It offers fewer dynamic sections than its competitors.

Available Sections

  • Custom HTML: Useful for developers to inject code.
  • Blog Posts & Collections: Standard Shopify modules.
  • Featured Banner & Image with Text: Basic promotional blocks.

Limitations

  • Video Integration: Unlike other themes that allow full-width cinematic video experiences, the embedded video section in Simple is bound to the content container width, making it less impactful.
  • Header & Sidebar: There are virtually no customization options for the header or sidebar beyond the menu links themselves. You cannot easily add branding elements or promotional messages in these areas.

The Verdict

Rating: B

While the Simple theme is versatile and technically functional, it is arguably too simple for modern e-commerce brands looking to tell a story.

The layout offers very little opportunity for branding or visual storytelling. If you are building a clothing store or a brand-heavy site, you would likely see better results with themes like Brooklyn or Boundless.

Recommendation

I would generally not recommend this theme over other free options unless you have a specific requirement for sidebar navigation. It lacks the robust sectioning needed to create a high-converting, modern storefront.
