How to Remove "Powered by Shopify" From Your Footer (No Code)
One of the quickest wins for elevating the professionalism of your Shopify store is removing the default "Powered by Shopify" text located in the footer. While Shopify is an excellent platform, displaying this link can sometimes distract from your brand identity.
The good news is that you do not need to be a developer, touch any code, or install any third-party apps to remove it. This tutorial will walk you through the native Shopify settings to get this done in under a minute.
Why Remove the "Powered by Shopify" Link?
Before we dive into the how-to, here is why you might want to remove this text:
- Brand Consistency: Keeps the focus entirely on your business.
- Professionalism: A clean footer looks more established.
- Aesthetics: Removes clutter from your site's bottom navigation.
Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these simple steps to remove the text using the Shopify Language Editor.
1. Access Your Shopify Admin
Log in to your store's dashboard. This is usually your myshopify.com URL followed by /admin.
2. Navigate to Online Store
On the left-hand sidebar, click on Online Store. By default, this will take you to the Themes section.
3. Open Language Settings
Locate your current live theme. You will see an Actions button (or three dots ... depending on your Shopify version). Click that button and select Edit languages from the dropdown menu.
Note: We are not clicking "Edit code." We are strictly changing the language settings, which is safer and easier.
4. Search for the Phrase
Once you are in the Language Editor:
- Click into the search bar at the top labeled "Filter items."
- Type in:
powered by shopify.
5. Remove the Text
The search results will filter down to a section usually labeled Checkout & system / Links or General / Footer.
You will see a field containing the text "Powered by Shopify." Here is the trick:
- Click inside the text box.
- Press the Spacebar once.
By entering a single space, you effectively tell Shopify to replace the default text with an empty space. If you simply delete the text and leave it blank, Shopify often reverts it to the default placeholder.
6. Save and Verify
Click the Save button in the top right corner.
Go to your live website and refresh the page. Scroll down to the footer. You should see that your copyright information and other links remain, but the "Powered by Shopify" text is completely gone.
Troubleshooting
This method works for the vast majority of Shopify themes, including Dawn and other official 2.0 themes.
However, if the text persists after following these steps:
- Ensure you actually typed a space in the language field rather than just clearing it.
- Clear your browser cache and refresh your store.
Summary
That is all there is to it! You have successfully cleaned up your footer without writing a single line of Liquid code. If you found this guide helpful, stick around for more technical Shopify tips and digital marketing advice to help grow your brand.
